RecPad 2014 will be held at the Royal Veiga Factory, neat to the central building of the University of Beira Interior, itself located in the center of Covilhã in an area with excellent access to public transportation.
Royal Veiga Factory is an historical building of the university, that has been subjected to an architectonic intervention with the aim of establishing a new museological nucleus, the Museum headoffice and the Documentation Centre/Archive. This building receives diverse expositions, conferences, and other internal and external events. They also have a permanent exhibition, where they present the Preparing, Spinning, Weaving and Finishing sections, through which they try to exalt the technological evolution.
Poster sessions and coffee breaks will all take place in Royal Veiga Factory and the Speaker session in the Department of Informatics.
Covilhã is a city located in the Cova da Beira subregion, in the district of Castelo Branco, Portugal. The city proper has 37,000 inhabitants, and the municipality has an area of 555.6 km2 with a total population of 53,500.
Major economic activities in the region include textiles, food industry and agriculture. The University of Beira Interior (established in 1979) has a great importance in the city today. Covilhã is traditionally a center of wool and textile industries – the university central building was the Royal Textile Factory, established by the Marquis of Pombal in the 18th century. Covilhã has deep industrial roots and is still one of the biggest woollens fabrics producers in Europe. Actually, this industry produces about 40,000 km of fabrics by year. Tourism is also important, and the city has a important role in the winter. The proximity of the highest Portuguese mountain range, Serra da Estrela, offers dramatic scenery and a great environment for those fond of hiking, camping, mountain climbing and skiing.
The city has a science park – Parkurbis – which has attracted several new businesses to the area. On September 23, 2013, Covilhã inaugurated the PT Data Center Covilhã, which is a data processing center. It is one of the largest data centers in the world, with about 75,500 m2.
